Today’s Take on 2010s Style: Streetwear Reigns Supreme
Two major trends lead the way for men’s fashion in the 2010s, while Harry Rosen responded with style to suit new tastes and strategies that would shape the current state of the company today.
It wasn’t that long ago when we all resided in the 2010s, yet the decade feels like a century ago in the memory – and in terms of style.
Streetwear, the dominant trend of the 2010s, was a big, loud, label-driven fashion era lead by music stars and youthful creatives, while puffer jackets became the hottest commodity whenever there was a whisper of cold weather.
At Harry Rosen, the 2010s brought about rapid change and redevelopment, guiding us into the decade we live in now.
Urban Update
Streetwear continued its rise to mainstream prominence throughout the 2010s, with brands like Supreme and Yeezy becoming household names. This fashion movement, rooted in urban culture, skateboarding, and hip-hop, has evolved into a significant force in fashion. You can even ask our very own Drake. Streetwear is characterized by its bold, often oversized silhouettes, casual comfort, and a blend of high fashion with everyday wear.
Today’s Take
Classic and trusted streetwear brands like Kenzo are joined by new and exciting entrants like Rhude, Balmain and Purple Brand. To achieve a streetwear look that’s both stylish and comfortable, start with dark jeans (think black resin denim by Purple Brand), which provide a versatile base for any outfit. Sneakers, like the VEJA black low canvas sneaker, are crucial, with limited-edition releases and high-profile collaborations driving the sneaker culture craze. Brands like New Balance and Masion Margiela frequently release sought-after models that quickly become status symbols.
Puffer Paradise
The 2010s brought a significant shift in the perception and styling of outerwear, with a growing demand for both comfort and practicality. This decade saw puffers and parkas become ideal choices for men seeking stylish yet functional outerwear. These jackets, known for their warmth, protection and technical fabrics, are now winter wardrobe staples, offering both fashion-forward looks and essential cold-weather performance.
Today’s Take
In Canada, owning a puffer or parka is almost non-negotiable, providing a robust barrier against the elements while maintaining a sleek, modern appearance. Our outerwear offering has never been broader, with options from classic brands such as Canada Goose, BOSS and Parajumpers, or luxury brands like Moncler. Layer with a cozy sweater and joggers for added warmth without sacrificing style. Complete the outfit with durable boots that offer both style and function, ensuring you stay comfortable and fashionable in any weather.
What Was Happening at Harry’s?
Harry Rosen’s foray into the world of eCommerce in the previous decade began to flourish in the 2010s, growing steadily year-over-year. As one of the first luxury retailers to make the leap, harryrosen.com saw great traction as an increasing number of customers embraced shopping online.
In 2018, Larry Rosen’s eldest son Ian joined the company, ushering in the third generation of the family business. Ian’s initial role as EVP, Digital & Strategy, saw him further the company’s push into the digital era, bolstering the eCommerce business with modern strategies, youthful energy, and contemporary style. In a few short years, Ian Rosen would go on to be promoted to President & CEO, taking over his father’s role, in no small part thanks to his immediate success in the 2010s.
This healthy boost to the digital sector of the business turned out to be fortuitous move for Harry Rosen when the COVID-19 pandemic sent Canadians (and people worldwide) inside at the end of the decade. While most of 2019 was unaffected by the virus, what was to come was truly an unprecedented age for Harry Rosen and retail as an industry.
