The Eclectic Style of Wes Anderson

A breakdown of Wes Anderson’s eclectic personal style, from his signature tailoring to his penchant for rich colours and textures.

While the directorial and cinematographic style of Wes Anderson’s many marvellous films is as clear and distinctive as any filmmaker’s, his personal style is also uniquely his own.

Although the acclaimed director is usually celebrated for his work behind the camera, this time around, we’re placing him under the spotlight to analyze his sartorial artistry.

Trademark Tailoring

Much like Anderson’s films, the foundation of his wardrobe is inspired by the classics. Most of the time you see him, he’s wearing tailoring — predominantly a two-piece suit with a button-up shirt. However, just like his films, his outfits always underscore his signature touches.

Anderson’s jackets are almost all cut in the same way — slim, structured, and with a slightly padded shoulder. What’s totally unique, however, is the gorge (where the jacket’s lapel meets the collar).

Residing somewhere between a peak and a notch lapel (more like a mixture of the two), Anderson’s jackets have quite an unusual gorge. Is this the mark of his personal tailor? A special request from Anderson himself? Either way, it has become unmistakably his own.

Rich Texture

Texture also plays a key role in defining Anderson’s signature style. Glancing through his catalogue of looks, you can’t ignore the ubiquitous presence of corduroy — one of the most richly textured fabrics available.

If not corduroy, then there’s a great chance he’s wearing a rich tweed or flannel instead.  In the warmer months, seersucker is another favourite of Anderson’s, with the fabric’s defining dimples scratching his itch for texture while keeping things lightweight.

Of course, a knit tie is his preference over a traditional smooth silk one, for obvious reasons. Similarly, he opts for suede shoes over smooth leather whenever possible.

Colour & Pattern

Just like in his films, colour plays a central role in Anderson’s wardrobe as well; it might even be the first thing you notice when looking at photos of his best ‘fits.

Baby blue, light brown, pastel pink, chartreuse, deep burgundy, sunset orange, brilliant red — you might have one or two items in your closet in those colours, but Anderson’s seems to be exclusively composed of them.

Anderson is no stranger to pattern play either — an argyle sweater vest, a striped or a herringbone suit, checkered shirts, dotted ties — however, his outfits never feel ‘busy’ or overstimulating. Anderson is equally adept at incorporating patterns and statement pieces into his looks as he is selecting A-list actors for his cast.

Signature Shoes

Completing Anderson’s characteristically eclectic ensembles are (predictably) his eccentric footwear choices. Although he has an affinity for tailoring, Anderson frequently dresses down his looks with decidedly more casual shoes.

A firm favourite of his is the Clarks Wallabee model. Comfortable, chunky, suede, and complete with a crepe sole, these are Anderson’s go-to shoes most of the time — and yes, even with tailoring. Anderson is also known to wear New Balance sneakers from time to time as well.

If he’s appearing on a red carpet or awards ceremony — any occasion that calls for a little more formality — you might see him sporting a pair of sleek, all-white loafers or suede Belgian loafers.
