Harry's Guide to Robert Talbott
Giving classic menswear styles a healthy dose of California cool, Robert Talbott is a brand for the modern man.
Founded in Carmel, California in 1950 by Robert and Audrey Talbott, this heritage menswear brand is anything but old school. From eye-catching fabrics and patterns to handsewn details and high-quality finishings, this truly special menswear label is one that deserves a place in your everyday wardrobe.
Just like fellow American fashion label Ralph Lauren, Robert Talbott also got its start making neckwear.
Audrey Talbott, Robert’s wife and partner, began making handsewn neckties and bowties in the family’s converted garage attached to their California home.
The brand's handsewn neckwear quickly attracted attention due to their fine fabrics and excellent quality, with its small-yet-dedicated group of customers steadily growing.
To this day, the “Handsewn” neckwear line is still produced locally in Monterey, California.
By 1990, Robert Talbott expanded its offerings, with premium dress shirts joining the collection.
Just like the neckties, Robert Talbott’s shirts gained immediate attention for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship, not to mention fit and style. This allowed the brand’s perception to change from neckwear specialists to an established menswear label.
Since then, Robert Talbott’s evolution has seen the brand continue to branch out, creating full collections from suits to accessories. However, it’s Robert Talbott’s premium button-up shirts and neckwear that have ensured the name and reputation of the brand remain associated with quality and sophistication.
Being born in California imbues a certain aesthetic identity into a brand’s DNA. West Coast style is naturally more laid-back, less buttoned-up, and further adept at including striking colours, patterns, and silhouettes (especially to someone in the ‘50s).
In the brand’s own words, “California luxury is relaxed and effortless. Soft, comfortable, and versatile, our menswear embodies that ‘polished without trying too hard’ look.”
Crossing continents within collections, Robert Talbott has reached a mastery of blending traditional American styles with European elegance and tailoring know-how. From stitching to styling, old-world tailoring techniques meet new-world design ideas, creating clothes made for both home and abroad.
“Each piece is crafted with meticulous attention to quality and a relaxed West Coast sensibility, allowing you to look refined and feel at home, wherever the day takes you.”
