The Cold-Weather Edit
Once summer wraps up and we journey ahead into fall and winter, dressing for your day-to-day changes drastically. While the summer months’ fairly calculable forecasts allow for semi-autopiloted outfit prep, the unpredictable weather of the following seasons means it’s essential you prepare for anything and everything the day may throw at you.
The only sensible solution? A robust and well-rounded wardrobe of coats,
jackets, and various outerwear must-haves designed to keep you warm, dry, comfortable, or all of the above. Here’s what you should have on-hand for the season ahead.
Vests
In transitional weather, a vest is your secret weapon to staying comfy all day long. No matter the style – quilted, puffer, or wool – the beauty of all vests lies in their lack of sleeves, which makes layering effortless. Wear yours as your outer-most layer when all you need underneath is a light sweater or knit. Or, layer your vest underneath your larger jacket or
coat for added insulation when you need it most.

Overcoats
Every man should have an overcoat in his wardrobe, no matter his sense of style. Whether you wear a suit and tie every day or you’re more of a hoodie and sweats type of guy, a classic wool overcoat will work with almost any ‘fit in almost any context. This won’t be as warm as your winter parka, but you’ll most likely get more use out of your overcoat throughout the fall and winter than any other coat.
From traditional to avant-garde, shop our selection of overcoats with standout styles from JOOP! and more.
Chore Jacket
Although many would call this a recent revelation in men’s fashion, chore jackets (in one iteration or another) have been around for hundreds of years, the first being French workwear jackets, made of indigo-dyed moleskine cotton. These boxy, utilitarian jackets have been recreated in many different forms, with refined versions now acting as modern alternatives to tailoring while traditionally inspired variations are more blue-collar casual in aesthetic.

Hybrid Jackets
The hybrid jacket gets its name from mixing a couple of different concepts together. First, the ‘jacket’ aspect – hybrid
jackets often include features typical of lightweight bombers or rain jackets (like a quilted or puffer body, full-length zipper or button placket, and a strong stand or bomber collar). The ‘hybrid’ half generally insinuates knitwear – this is usually embodied by knitted sleeves, a knitted back, or elasticated cuffs or hem.

Parkas
A parka is every Canadian’s go-to when winter’s coldest days arrive. Nothing will protect you from the deep freeze as well as a heavily insulated parka, which are usually thickly lined with goose down or a synthetic padded material. We recommend opting for a length that extends at least down to your knees, ensuring the best defense against strong gusts of wind and heavy precipitation.

Moose Knuckles.
Aviator Jackets
Aviator jackets, bomber jackets – whatever you call them, these staple pieces can always be relied upon for their undeniable cool-factor and timeless appeal. Many different interpretations of the bomber have been created over the years, the most popular made from premium leather, suede, or nylon fabrics, though all of them cut short at the hem and left slightly boxy in the body, creating that instantly recognizable silhouette.
There’s no shortage of aviator jackets available at Harry Rosen, though this season, we have a particular affinity for those by
Brunello Cucinelli.
Cold-Weather Accessories
Hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and the like are all easily forgettable yet equally essential elements of your Fall/Winter wardrobe. They say your body loses most of its heat through your head, which means a warm hat is a non-negotiable on winter’s coldest days. Your hands and feet are the first places to get cold when the temperature drops, so don’t forget to dress them appropriately too.

Boots
Of course, you can’t think about leaving the house in the fall and winter without first considering your
footwear. Dry days are easier – boots or
shoes,
leather or suede – whatever your preference, you’ll be fine as long as you’re warm. Come the rain and snow, however, you’ll want a pair of water-resistant (if not waterproof) boots warm enough to prevent you from losing feeling in your feet.
This season, entrust brands who know how to craft quality footwear when selecting your new shoes for the season ahead, like Bontoni, Thom Browne, and BOSS, to name a few.
