Canada's Best Ski Hills According to Evan McEachran
Two-time Canadian Olympic skier Evan McEachran reveals his favourite places to practice what he does best (and how to embrace the après-ski culture) across Canada.
For avid Olympics fans and ski hill speed demons, the name Evan McEachran will sound familiar – the two-time Olympian, two-time X Games medalist, and six-time World Cup medalist hailing from Oakville, Ontario has represented Canada on two skis at the highest level.
Additionally, as a member of the Canadian Slopestyle Ski Team, the specialist freeskier is also well seasoned when it comes to the best slopes our country has to offer. This ski season, we caught up with Evan to get his expert opinion on where to go (and what to do) for those looking to embrace the winter sport like an Olympian.
Q.Which are your top must-ski hills in Canada?
A. Without a doubt, I have to start with Whistler Blackcomb. Nowhere does it quite like Whistler! The variety of terrain is endless, the snow is great, and the après-ski scene just steps off the mountain is amazing.
Banff, Alberta, is another must. It's one of the most beautiful places to ski in Canada—everywhere you look resembles a postcard. Within an hour of each other, you have Lake Louise and Sunshine Village, two world-class ski resorts with endless terrain for all abilities.
Craigleith Ski Club, Ontario, is my home resort and where I grew up skiing. While the hills in Ontario may be vertically challenged, Craigleith has some of the best-maintained slopes, and in my opinion, the best après-ski on the escarpment.
Q. What are some of your favourite skiing achievements and memories?
A. Throughout my ski career, I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world and make new friends across the globe. Looking back over the past 10 years, the memories and laughs shared along the way are what I cherish the most.
Representing your country in the Olympics is always a special achievement. Seeing how your country supports you and having the opportunity to showcase what you love doing to such a large audience is truly unique.
Q. What do you value most in ski apparel?
A. When choosing my outfits, I value comfort, maneuverability, and style. Being able to move freely on the slopes and feel comfortable in what I’m wearing is essential for a good day on the mountain. And as with everything in life—look good, feel good.
Q. What are some of your favourite ski villages?
A. One of my favourite ski villages is Niseko in Japan. The snow quality there is second to none, the food is top-notch, and the culture is remarkable.
Q. What does your ideal après ski entail?
A. Nothing beats finishing a ski day and heading to the lodge, sitting by the fire, and sipping on an ice-cold beer or an Aperol spritz. Of course, you need some good music and a little dancing to go with it.
Q. For the non-skiers out there, what’s the best way to embrace après ski culture?
A. Drinks, music, fondue—and you’ve got to dress the part. Bring your best vibes because you’re going to have a lot of fun.
