Milan Men’s Fashion Week Street Style: June ‘24 Trend Report
The top trends as seen on the streets during Milan Men’s Fashion Week June 2024.
Each year, twice per season, many of the world’s most influential players in the men’s fashion industry flock to Florence for Pitti Uomo, the famed menswear trade show. Following the frenzy in Firenze, the men’s style circuit migrates to Milan, where there’s a distinctly different, decidedly dressier vibe among the attendees of Italy’s fashion capital.
Amongst the maelstrom of Milan Men’s Fashion Week, Montréal-based photographer Marc Richardson (@shooting.people) finds beauty in the busy and is always on-hand to snap up the best-looking outfits on offer. And, now that we’ve looked back at his shots and collected our thoughts, we’ve identified these as the top four trends from this June’s multi-day event in Milan.
Some hardcore tailoring enthusiasts might try to tell you that double-breasted jackets should always be worn closed, unlike their single-breasted counterparts, which can be worn open. However, we’re willing to bet those headstrong aficionados have never been to Italy in mid-June before.
While perhaps less traditional, we find the unbuttoned double-breasted look incredibly practical and particularly rakish. Not only does wearing your DB open allow for increased airflow and breathability, keeping you cool during heat waves, but it also provides a certain nonchalance (dare we say, sprezzatura?) to an otherwise more formal outfit.
Tonal dressing is one of the most elegant ways to showcase sartorial prowess as the window of opportunity for one to get it wrong is quite wide. A few wrong moves and you could end up looking more like Dwight Schrute than David Beckham...
The key, as exemplified here by these men in monochromatic looks, is to ensure you retain slight differences in fabric colour, texture, and pattern from piece to piece. Optionally, adding a statement accessory in a contrasting colour can underscore your intention behind a totally tonal look.
Calling a navy sport jacket a “trend” illustrates just how casual people dress these days compared to previous decades. That said, anyone who proclaims “tailoring is dead” should take a long, hard look at just how good these gents look in this timeless staple.
No matter how you’d describe your style, every man’s wardrobe should feature a navy blazer for occasions when you want to incorporate a touch of elegance without needing to commit to a full suit or to feeling overly dressed up.
Slightly scruffy, a bit bent out of shape, but full of character; dad caps truly do personify their paternal namesake. They’re also a responsible addition to an outfit (an attribute any dad can get behind) in keeping the sun off your face and out of your eyes – quite pragmatic for a summer in Italy!
The true beauty of the dad cap lies in its effortless cool factor, however. There’s nothing pretentious or overly fancy about a beat-up old ballcap, and that’s exactly the point – they don’t seek the attention they inevitably receive, and that’s the most appealing thing about them.
